Proposed Marina For Victoria, BC Looking For Government Decision By Year's End .
Monday, 28 November 2011 17:40 . .The Victoria Times Colonist newspaper has reported that the developers of a proposed luxury marina in Victoria's harbour are hoping the federal government will make a decision on the project by year's end.

The story explained that Transport Canada originally approved a navigable waters permit in May 2010, and received green lights from Fisheries and Oceans Canada and Environment Canada for a 52-slip marina.

But the $19-million project was subsequently decreased in size to a 29-slip development after a rezoning by the City of Victoria in September 2010.

New submissions for the smaller project were made to Transport Canada. Public input was then solicited for the federal government late last year and in February of this year.

Federal officials were contacted by the newspaper last Wednesday but did not provide an update on the application's status.

Marina developers would like to get a result before the end of the year. If approvals come through, that will allow marketing and construction to go ahead in 2012.

"We are still waiting on Transport Canada for the revised navigable waters permit and environmental screening," Lachlan MacLean, vice-president of WAM Development Group, said Wednesday from Vancouver.

"I think they want to be very careful because the project has been under a lot of scrutiny, so they want to make sure they have explored every avenue and make sure that they have a very robust decision."

WAM is partnering with local developer Bob Evans to build the marina and two commercial buildings in front of Songhees.

"If we can have that decision made before the end of the year, that works well going into boat show season, which kicks off early in 2012," MacLean said. They would like to promote the marina at the Seattle Boat Show starting Jan. 27, the Vancouver International Boat Show starting Feb. 8, and a show in Victoria in April.

The marina is taking reservations for slips, which would be able to handle vessels of 20 to 45 metres in length.

Federal approvals are needed before the developer can dredge the seabed under the marina site. The next window for dredging would be in July 2012. If work starts next year, the marina would open in 2013, he said.

The development project is as contentious as it is complex. Federal, provincial and municipal governments all have decision-making roles in the plan. A variety of community interests rallied to battle the marina, citing concerns including blocked views, environmental worries, decreased safety in the already busy harbour, and a dislike of large luxury yachts.

Victoria responded by downzoning the provincially owned water lot where the marina would be located, resulting in a decrease in size. The project received a development permit approval this past September for its commercial buildings.

Hey Cindy:

I took a few photos but they are all of scenery, well there is one of me and it is horrific....LOL. Bonney has taken 181 photos and is mailing us all a CD. So there will be more to choose from. I love my photos though, lots of ambiance. Just when I was supposed to flake the sail, I think I was taking photos.....LOL.

Had an amazing time. Met some great people. Learned so much, including navigation. What I will remember the most is at the helm in 33 knots of wind and not feeling the least bit scared (thanks Mike), and stopping in the evening at different islands was just so amazing. How lucky we are to be Canadians in this beautiful country. A big thank you to Mike our skipper who accommodated us on our various levels of competence/skill, an amazing feat in itself. Thank you so much for the ride to and from the airport Cyndie, just made things run smoothly. All in all, an incredible experience, one that I won't forget in a while.

My 15 year old son, just returned from his competent crew and day skipper course last week. He had an exceptional time! He totally lided his instructor, Brain, who had him docking in some seriouse winds!!!
Aidan was challenged and surprized with what the course covered (he has been sailing for many years already). Brian covered all the basics and then some. Aidan said they did a lot of docking, navigation, chart plotting, anchor setting and ofcoarse, sailing!
They had everything from 26 degree weather to gail force winds and rain!
He had a brilliant time and I recomend this to any teen that enjoys boating!!!
Aidan is working on his Coastal Navigation in preperation to his Coastal skipper course!

Just to think that it is possible to sail anywhere I go in the world for my next holiday puts a giant smile on my face. Now, I won't have to sit at the resorts and wish I was on a boat... I will be able to charter one myself... and forget the resort all together, just stay on the boat and go anywhere you want. That's what they mean by freedom! No one should live their life without learning to sail and if I can do it, then I'm sure that anyone can.

Spring Commissioning Checklist

To help boaters have a trouble-free summer boating season, BoatU.S., the nation’s largest recreational boating association, has a spring commissioning checklist. Whether you have a power or sailboat, inboard or outboard, following this checklist is an easy way to get ready for the season.

BEFORE YOU LAUNCH:

Inspect and lubricate seacocks. Hoses and hose clamps should be inspected and replaced as necessary.
Replace deteriorated zincs.
Inspect prop(s) for dings, pitting and distortion. Make sure cotter pins are secure. Grip the prop and try moving the shaft - if it’s loose, the cutlass bearing may need to be replaced.
Check to make sure the rudderstock hasn’t been bent.
Inspect the hull for blisters, distortions and stress cracks.
Make sure your engine intake sea strainer is free of corrosion and properly secured.
Check the engine shaft and rudder stuffing boxes for looseness. After the boat is launched, be sure to check these as well as through-hulls for leaks.
Use a hose to check for deck leaks at ports and hatches. Renew caulk or gaskets as necessary.
OUTDRIVES and OUTBOARD ENGINES:

Inspect rubber outdrive bellows for cracked, dried and/or deteriorated spots (look especially in the folds), and replace if suspect.
Check power steering and power trim oil levels. Replace worn-out zincs.
Inspect outer jacket of control cables. Cracks or swelling indicate corrosion and mean that the cable has to be replaced.
ENGINES AND FUEL SYSTEMS:

Inspect fuel lines, including fill and vent hoses, for softness, brittleness or cracking. Check all joints for leaks and make sure all lines are well supported with non-combustible clips or straps with smooth edges.
Inspect fuel tanks, fuel pumps and filters for leaks. Clamps should be snug and free of rust. Clean fuel filters.
Inspect cooling hoses and fittings for stiffness, rot, leaks and/or cracking. Make sure they fit snugly and are double-clamped.
Every few years, remove and inspect exhaust manifold for corrosion.
Clean and tighten electrical connections, especially both ends of battery cables. Wire-brush battery terminals and fill cells with distilled water.
Inspect bilge blower hose for leaks.
SAILBOAT RIGGING:

Inspect fittings for cracks and rust. Inspect wire halyards and running backstays for "fishhooks" and rust.
Remove tape on turnbuckles and lubricate threads, preferably with Teflon. Replace old tape with fresh tape.
Recaulk through-deck chainplates as necessary (generally, once a decade).
TRAILERS:

Inspect tire treads and sidewalls for cracks or lack of tread and replace as necessary. Check air pressure. Don’t forget the spare!
Inspect bearings and repack as necessary.
Test tail and back-up lights. Test winch to make sure it’s working properly.
Inspect trailer frame for rust. Sand and paint to prevent further deterioration.
MISCELLANEOUS:

Check expiration dates on flares and fire extinguishers.
Check stove and remote tanks for loose fittings and leaking hoses.
Inspect bilge pump and float switch to make sure it’s working properly.
Inspect dock and anchor lines for chafing.
Update or replace old charts, waterway guides.
Check shore power cable connections for burns, which indicates the cable needs to be replaced.
Make sure your boating license and/or registration is up to date. Don’t forget your trailer tags.
Review your boat insurance policy and update coverage if needed. Be sure you have fuel spill insurance coverage.
Make sure you have a properly sized and wearable life jackets in good condition for each passenger, including kids and pets.

Putting your boat back in commission for the new season

Proper spring boat maintenance and preparation will make a major difference in the safe performance of your boat in this upcoming season

Preseason preparation makes the difference in whether we have a safe boating experience or enjoy an unwanted adventure. If you followed the suggestions described in the article Boat Winterizing and Dry Storage, you are well on the way to getting back in the water today.

Here are some suggestions for spring boat preparation and links to articles on these topics at Boating and Sailing. Talk to your boatyard operator and mechanic, they may have additional suggestions for maintenance that is appropriate for your boat. Remember to exercise the concepts of Clean Boating as you get ready for the new season.

Spring boat preparation is hard work, but certainly within the capability of most boaters. Many commercial boatyards happily provide these services for your boat. Schedule yard work well in advance and avoid the rush that comes with the first nice spring day. Boat preparation involves several areas of interest. They are:

This article begins with discussion of the first three topics.

Vessel Exterior - Scrub down your boat with a mild detergent. Use a detergent that causes minimal environmental impact. Remember that in some states, it is illegal to allow wash water back into the harbor without treatment. Apply a coat of wax to the boat. Clean and polish all metal fittings. Ensure cockpit drains and scuppers are clear, they are easily blocked by leaves and winter debris. Check the operation of hatches and windows, clean and lubricate their hinges. Clean and check the condition of canvas.

Hull Condition - Lifting and storing a vessel can cause minor damage. Look for scratches, blisters, and abrasions to the hull. Check transducers, pitot tubes, and exterior surfaces of thru-hull fittings. Ensure the engine sea strainer is clean, free of corrosion, and secure. Arrange for repairs and refinishing of hull defects. Once hull maintenance is complete, touchup or apply a new coat of bottom paint as needed. Replace your zincs. New zincs are inexpensive and prevent costly damage from corrosion and electrolysis. Inspect the condition of the vessel's shaft, cutlass bearing, supporting struts, and propeller. Check the swim platform and boarding ladder.

Vessel Interior – Inspect the condition of thru-hull fitting, work attached seacocks (valves), check the flexible hoses and clamps. Consider proactive replacement of clamps and hoses. A failed thru-hull fitting can cause a major emergency. Look for oil in the bilges. If oil is present, identify its source, take prompt action, and fix the leak. Clean the bilges and stock oil adsorbent pads and pillows for use in the engine spaces. Check operation of bilge pumps and switches. Lubricate stuffing boxes, shaft and rudder logs. Your boat should be equipped with a good water separating filter that can reduce ethanol fuel problems. Drain any water present in the filter and check the condition of all flexible fuel lines.

Cruising destinations: Desolation Sound

Captain George Vancouver first sailed these waters in 1792 - and seeing the land and seascape so remote and forbidding, he was inspired to name it Desolation Sound!

The park was created in 1973 and continues to be a popular destination for boaters. Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park is the only major marine park of its kind on the Pacific coast of Canada. From your Island Cruising yacht, you can expect to see a majestic and untouched landscape made up of evergreen mountains topped with snowcaps, fjords, waterfalls, and teeming with birds and other wildlife.

Things to see and do: The first thing that comes to mind when considering things to see and do in a marine provincial park is of course... sailing! Explore the numerous little coves, inlets and islands that make up the 60km of pristine coastline. Ashore, interesting tidal pools and marshes will enthral you with an abundance of marine organisms, birds and waterfowl. Use the dinghy and outboard motor included in your Island Cruising charter to explore the waters not accessible by sailboat. Other activities include kayaking, swimming and scuba diving. The waters of Desolation Sound do not experience as much tidal circulation as in other parts of the region. It is for this reason that pumping out your holding tank is strictly forbidden in Desolation Sound. Conversely, because the waters do not move as much, they warm up significantly during the summer months and are particularly inviting for swimmers, snorkelers, and scuba divers alike! Fishermen can try their luck at catching salmon, rockfish, cod and snapper. Be aware that fishing for rockfish is limited in the conservation areas, and you must have the appropriate licenses to fish. Island Cruising can add a fishing kit to your charter - ask our reservations team for more information.

Marinas and anchorages: There are many anchorage sites in the region, including the beautiful Prideaux Haven; Tenedos Bay, connected to Unwin Lake by a short hiking trail; and Grace Harbour, which is well protected from all winds and seas. Unwin Lake is ideal for swimming and freshwater fishing, which makes for a relaxing day on shore. While marinas are uncommon in Desolation Sound, the historic Lund Hotel is well worth a visit! Fully renovated and restored, the hotel has an on-site restaurant, pub, general store, and fuel dock, and also offers guided kayaking tours! There are two options for the kayaking tours: kayak by moonlight and experience the magic of the bioluminescence, or enjoy a retelling of the history of Lund, and hear all about the First Nations' history as well as the antics of the early settlers.

Hazards in the area: If stopping by Mitlenatch Island on your way from our base at Pacific Playgrounds to Desolation Sound, be aware of the rock to the north of the northern tip of the small island, as well as the reef and rocks off of the west coast of the island. Temporary anchorage is available along the northwest shore only. Navigating the waters of Desolation Sound does involve careful inspection of the charts and vigilance at the helm. There are rocks in and around many of the popular inlets, such as Rosetta Rock at Malaspina Inlet, and the rocks to port when entering Tenedos Bay. A responsible and experienced navigator should not have any problems, providing daily route planning is observed and the GPS is referred to at regular intervals.

Some interesting and unique tours are offered here on the Island - join a guide and snorkle with salmon, or swim with seals. Some excellent diving charters are operated where you'll definitely see Giant Pacific octopus and wolf eels, and the rare 6-gill shark that can grow to over 20 ft, inhabiting the areas around south Denman and Hornby Islands.
Vancouver Island diving offers some pretty interesting underwater topography, from rocky outcrops to sandy seabeds. There's also has a handful of decent artificial reefs that have been sunk for divers to explore, including a couple of Boeing 737's located off the eastern shores of the Island.

Other popular dive sites include Jedediah Island, Madrona Point and Nanoose Bay.

When's The Best Time To Go?
Winter is prime season for Vancouver Island diving. The Island's sea life is vibrant and plentiful year round, but local divers prefer winter. That's when the view-obscuring plankton dies off and visibility can reach 150 feet, with water clarity rivaling that of the most popular Caribbean dive sites (but not as warm!)
Underwater viewing distances from fall to spring is about 80 to 100 feet.

The Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and the Lahaina Yacht Club are pleased to announce the 2012 Vic-Maui International Yacht Race.

The 2012 Vic-Maui race, the 23 edition of this ocean racing classic, will start from Victoria, B.C. Class starts will be staggered, with starts as early as June 28, 2012. The race will finish near Lahaina, Maui, a great circle route distance of 2308 nautical miles.

Vic-Maui, first contested in 1968 and runs every second year since, is the pinnacle of Pacific Northwest ocean racing. The Vic-Maui race challenges sailors to demonstate thier skills by beating out of the Juan De Fuca Strait, reaching around the Pacific High Pressure zone and running the trades to Hawaii. The 2010 Vic-Maui enjoyed excellent wind conditions, with line honors captured by a 35 foot high performance cruiser which finished in just 11 days and 15 hours.Overall win earned by a 48 foot performance cruiser which finished in twelve days and twelve hours. Vic-Maui records are waiting to be broken in 2012!

The adventure begins during the long daysof mid summer and each day of the passage south towards the tropics brings warmer temperatures. Today is the day for Jeanne Socrates, 67-year-old grandmother, to begin her solo non-stop circumnavigation.

She's been held up by the weather for a few days, but today she is to be towed to her start line at Canada's Victoria Harbour entrance to be ready to sail away around 4pm local time.

Her attempt is being recorded by the World Speed Sailing Record Council, and for that she carries a 'black box' to record her attempt.

She says today she is expecting west wind over strong (Springs) ebb tide from Race Rock westward, so will have rough water, but a 'push' in right direction initially, with difficult sailing out of Strait of Juan de Fuca.

That's a calculation, and by late Tuesday, she thinks the storm that has kept her from starting should have abated. She needs to get away south from Canada before the winter gales start in earnest.

Of course attempting to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world may not be the typical behaviour of a 67-year-old grandmother."

The Importance of Being Winterized

Have you ever dreamed of owning your own boat and having the freedom to go wherever the wind takes you? Or perhaps this dream is already your reality.

Improper boat maintenance and winterization can snatch that dream away. Don't let an easily avoidable problem like mildew stop you from sailing next summer. Here are some tips from our experts in yacht maintenance and winterization:

1. At the end of the season, have your oil and filters changed. Over time, impurities build up in your engine oil that will corrode the internal components and settle around items like rings and seals. Having your oil changed is an essential step in engine maintenance.

2. Have your boat throughly cleaned inside and out. Don't wait till the springtime when the scum and barnacles will be even harder to get rid of and could end up taking twice the amount of time to clean off. Ensure your boat is free from damp and the risk of mildew by purchasing and installing a dehumidifier/heating system. This is especially important for fibreglass boats. Remove your foul weather gear, cushions and other small items which are susceptible to mildew, and store them in a dry, clean space.

3. Drain and clean the bilge and spray with a moisture displacing lubricant.

4. Drain the water tanks and the hot water tank. Empty the holding tanks and add clean water and an enzyme-based additive that will break down any leftover residue.

Cruising destinations: Pender Island

Pender Island is actually comprised of two separate islands. Although, North Pender Island and South Pender Island were originally connected by a narrow strip of land, the isthmus was dredged in 1902 to allow the ferry to travel from Hope Bay (on the East side of the North Island) through the sheltered waters of Bedwell Harbour on its way to Sidney. Suprisingly, the bridge connecting the two islands was only built 53 years later, in 1955!

Things to see and do: Anchor at the Beaumont Marine Park and hike up Mt. Norman (typically takes one hour). Explore the Medicine Beach Nature Sanctuary, which is one of the last remaining wetland areas in the region. Play 27 holes of frisbee golf at the Golf Island Disc Park. Although the course features a bumpy landscape and many trees, it makes for a beautiful walk through the woods! Visit the Pender Island Museum, and find out more about the rich history of the Penders. Join Pender Island Kayak Adventures on a kayaking tour and explore the hundreds of bays and beaches that make up the 38 miles of coastline.

Marinas and anchorages: Poets Cove Resort and Spa is synonymous with a visit to the Pender Islands. Featuring a fantastic restaurant, a casual pub, an in-house spa (that offers some treatments, such as back massages, in the comfort of your own boat) and a hot tub & swimming pool, Poets Cove is a favourite among boaters! Another great marina is the Otter Bay Marina, which offers bicycle and scooter rentals, laundry, volleyball, badminton, a horseshoe pit, and a kids playground! Moorage is also available at Port Browning Marina and includes the use of the swimming pool. Mooring buoys and anchoring are avaliable at the Beaumont Marine Park, Medicine Beach Nature Sanctuary, Thieves Bay, Hope Bay and Otter Bay.

Hazards in the area: With its low topography and position in the shadow of the Olympic Mountain range, Pender Island is protected from storms and receives much less precipitation than the surrounding areas. One hazard to be aware of: there are some rocks along the west side of the breakwater at Thieves Bay. The area is marked well with many black buoys.

Cruising destinations: Saanich Inlet

The 12 mile inlet that cuts into Vancouver Island is a perfect place to relax with its calm waters and light winds. Boat traffic is minimal in the inlet.

Things to see and do: Visit the award winning French restaurant, the Deep Cove Chalet. With its outstanding menu and gold medal winning wine cellar, you are sure to have a meal to remember! Anchor your boat out in the bay and tender in with your dinghy, or tie up at the Deep Cove Marina and staff from the restaurant will pick you up in their limousine. There are also a few wineries to visit on the Saanich Peninula: Muse Winery, located behind the Deep Cove Chalet, produces award winning, hand crafted wines. Wine tastings, wine terrace, bistro & gift shop open during summer months. Further up the Inlet, another small inlet breaks off: Tod Inlet. Here you can anchor your yacht and take your dinghy to the Butchart Gardens' dock. Stop in for high tea and visit the 50 acres of beautiful floral displays. Enjoy the fireworks display from the comfort of your yacht, or for a better view, bring a picnic blanket and stay late at the gardens. At the end of Tod Inlet, you can access the Gowlland Tod Provincial Park with 25 km of good hiking trails.

Marinas and anchorages: Brentwood Bay Marina is a 40-slip marina with great on-site facilities, including washrooms, showers, laundry, a fitness room, pool, an adult's only hot tub, and cable TV. There is also an elegant restaurant and spa a short walk from the docks. Anglers Anchorage Marina also offers transient moorage and is walking distance to the village of Brentwood where you can find all amenities. Alternatively, anchor in the heart of Tod Inlet for some peace and quiet - perfect for those looking to relax in a pristine, natural environment!

Hazards in the area: The Inlet is very sheltered and during the summer months is typically quite calm with light winds. When entering the Inlet stay well off the coast, and be aware of Wains Rock 0.2 miles off Moses Point (refer to chart 3441). When coming into Brentwood Bay Marina approach the docks from the north side, keeping the red Buoy on the starboard. Buoy marks dangerous rocks.

Cruising the Gulf Islands

Some very popular boating areas in British Columbia are the Gulf Islands. The islands are protected from the winds and rains of the west coast and marine life is abundant. During the summer, you might see killer whales, seal lions, harbour seals and porpoises. Blue herons, Canada geese, bald eagles, grebes and cormorants make up the bird species found on the Gulf Islands and surrounding waters. In and around this region, are over a dozen marine parks, designated for public use. Some offer small craft floats, buoys, interesting hiking trails, picnic and sanitation facilities. To protect and study the plant, mammal and bird life many places are set aside as ecological reserves. Please respect these fragile areas. Summer weather in the Gulf Island region means mornings of calm winds and seas. The afternoons can bring westerly winds and choppy conditions. It is a good idea to do your boat cruising in the mornings.

Cruising Destinations: Salt Spring Island

Ganges Harbour is an excellent port of call; whether you're just beginning your vacation and need a place to provision your boat with local organic produce, or whether you've been out cruising for a while and need a little break.

Things to see and do: The possibilities are endless on Salt Spring Island: from restaurants and pubs, to the arts & crafts market on Saturdays, to the farmers' market on Tuesdays, to art galleries, wineries, hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving and more! Salt Spring Island is a must on any cruiser's itinerary.

Marinas and anchorages: Located at 48°51' N 123°28' W, Ganges Harbour is a single day sail from the Island Cruising base at Port Sidney. There are several marinas and anchorages to choose from at Ganges: Ganges Marina is a good choice if you're expecting strong winds blowing southeasterly, as there is a floating breakwater there. It is also the closest marina to the town centre. Other services offered are refueling, wireless internet, and laundry facilities. Best of all, the marina offers complimentary coffee and muffins from 8.00 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. every morning in the summer months! Another option is Salt Spring Marina, which has the best views of Ganges Harbour! Located next to the popular Moby's Pub, Salt Spring Marina offers affordable overnight moorage, wireless internet, laundry facilities, and car, scooter & bicycle rentals. There are also good anchorage sites east of Money Makers Rock and the marinas, where the anchor will hold well in the sticky black mud of the ocean floor.

Hazards in the area: Be aware of Money Makers Rock to the SE of Salt Spring Marina. This area is well marked on both the charts and in the water. Nevertheless, boaters do touch bottom at this location each and every year, so be vigilant! According to Northwest Yachting, "the real problem area is in the Chain Islands between Ganges and Long Harbour. Just north of the Third Sister Island is an area of shoal and rocks that over the years has claimed its share of boats. Last fall, it added two fatalities to its score as two boaters attempted to cut through this area in a fast boat, late in the day, hitting the rocks at full speed. The best advice is not to cut through the Chain Islands. On the surface the area looks clear, yet as the charts show, lurking below the surface are many areas with rocks and shoal. We are often complacent thinking that cruising on the water is safe, safer than driving on a solid highway. But underwater rocks, logs and other obstructions, combined with speed, can lead to fatal results".

We extend a special invitation for you and your crew to join us again, for the 36th annual Round Saltspring Race. You will remember the camaraderie, the magnificent course and scenery, and the friendly weekend events which make up this whole race.

Features still include our Sunday afternoon Lamb BBQ (this year with mint sauce if you wish) and awards presentation. There is an array of trophies and fabulous donated prizes for winners in a variety of areas.

Rules

The regatta will be governed by the rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing. The CYA prescriptions to The Racing Rules of Sailing will apply. The applicable One Design Class Rules will apply. The sailing instructions may change some racing rules. The changes will appear in full in the sailing instructions. If there is a conflict between languages the English text will take precedence.

Eligibility and Entry

The regatta is open to one-design dinghy classes with a minimum of 5 entries. Classes that do not meet this requirement will be started together and scored with North American Portsmouth numbers. We anticipate classes to include Fireballs, 29ers, 420s, 470s, Lasers, Radials, Megabytes, Bytes, and Optimist.

Crossing the Swell: An Atlantic Journey by Rowboat

Tori Holmes, a 21-year-old from Alberta, and Paul Gleeson, a 29-year-old from Limerick, Ireland, met in Australia when Holmes answered an ad to drive the support vehicle for Gleeson's 5,000-kilometre cycling trek across that country. During their first adventure together, Paul fell hard: both off his bike and for the woman driving the car.

It soon became clear that crossing a continent together was simply not enough. Acting on self-assured determination and an ever-growing sense of adventure, Paul and Tori embraced the dream of rowing a tiny boat across the vastness of the Atlantic Ocean in the 2005/06 Trans-Atlantic Race. Of course, neither of the young adventurers knew how to row.

In November 2005, after months of training, Paul and Tori left the Canary Islands to row 4,800 kilometres across the Atlantic. They completed their epic journey in February, after 86 days of huge seas, violent storms, terrifying capsizes, unbearable thirst, bizarre hallucinations and sleep deprivation. Along the way, however, during one of the darkest moments in the race, inspiration came in the form of an unseen, yet completely perceptible, presence. Old seafaring lore has several theories as to what this might have been, but both adventurers are keeping their minds open on it.

Charter "Wombat", a Jeanneau 40.3 (2007) for 7 days for the reasonable base rate of $3500.00 "Wombat" has 3 cabins and 2 heads.

An ideal charter yacht with good sailing performance, aided by the fully battened mainsail and twin helms.

The forward cabin boasts an ensuite head with a shower, a large and very comfortable v-berth with a small seating area adjacent, and a large hanging closet, with more than reasonable storage space.

The two equal sized aft cabins offer generous berth space and share a large head with a shower.

Her main saloon and dining area are forward of the L-shaped galley, and the salon converts to a double bunk for extra kids or crew.

What's under the water?

Ever stop to think what's under the water when you're out sailing round the Gulf Islands? It's so easy to get caught up in the beauty above sea level: the light breeze tickling your skin, the sun's warm, syrupy rays comforting you, and Mt. Baker looming in the distance... The water looks so cold and uninviting that it's easy to believe that what's under it is the same.

I stopped by the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre this afternoon and my eyes popped at all the colours and the creatures inhabiting our local waters. I'm going to make it a priority to go scuba diving sometime soon! Olympic Torch comes to Sidney!

Olympic fever has begun. The highly anticipated kick-off of the Olympic torch relay begun outside the BC legislature building this morning, albeit 90 minutes late... Rough weather conditions en-route managed to delay the Canadian Forces airplane that was carrying the flame, but they did not dampen its spirit. Shortly after 1.30 p.m. today, the flame was carried down Beacon Avenue here in Sidney. Lots of supporters and well wishers came out to cheer along the procession, and join in the festivities. Island Cruising was there too to show our support for our Canadian athletes! We will have yachts available for charter out of Granville Island Marina next February, so if you are heading out to Vancouver for the Olympics, contact us to arrange for your accommodation on board one of our yachts.
